Why Hire?
Hiring costs are vastly less than buying or making the same items. Not only do you not spend as much on the item in the first place, but you don’t have to pay to store it when you’re done. What are the chances you’ll really need a tin bath again any time soon? If you’ve borrowed one, good for you – the folks you borrowed it from still have to store it. If you bought or made one, you’ll need to keep it somewhere until someone else asks if they can borrow it from you. Even if you do need it again, you’re paying to keep it between times, so the cost of the item is not just its initial price, but includes years of storage fees as well.
About Us:
PropsMaster was born backstage at an AmDram production of Bugsy Malone. We’d been all over town half a dozen times looking for all the things we needed, borrowing some from other companies, making what we could and buying the rest. It occurred to us that while the Edinburgh AmDram scene knows where to go for sets and costumes, companies end up reinventing the wheel when it comes to props, and then have to store the things they’ve made or bought, even though they’ll probably never use them again. “What a shame,” we said to ourselves, “that there’s no central store for props, the way there is for sets.” That was about Wednesday night, and by Friday we were saying we ought to stop moaning about it and start one. And hey presto! PropsMaster was born, in concept at least.
Our stock is limited at the moment, but we’ll be adding to it at as fast a rate as we can manage, and we hope to collaborate with companies that no longer want to pay to store their props, so watch for a memo from us soon.
